“There’s always new music to discover,” said Ryan Kickland, owner of Black Hills Vinyl in downtown Rapid City.

You may recognize his name as he is a staple in the local music scene as a songwriter and performer that delves into folk, psychedelic, rock and film scores–some songs being featured on shows like Dateline NBC, Facing Trauma, Disappeared, Justified and more.

His partner in crime (and “brains” behind the operation) is his wife, Mel. The couple, already avid vinyl record collectors, knew they had wanted to start a business, but weren’t sure exactly what to do.

“It was her idea to start a vinyl shop,” said Ryan. “I didn’t need any encouraging after that.”
