Since 2019, Blue Rock Bar & Grill has been a dining destination for locals and visitors alike that blends delicious cuisine, warm hospitality, and a lively atmosphere.

The rustic, yet contemporary décor, adorned with touches of natural granite and stone, creates a relaxed and comfortable setting, creating the unique backdrop for any occasion.

One highlighted aspect of Blue Rock Bar & Grill —located at the Sanford Sports Complex just off Interstate 29—l is its educated and dedicated culinary team.

“We all come from different backgrounds and states, so with the knowledge we have gained from our pasts, we try to implement that here,” said Juan Niño, both operations manager and executive chef.

The team of chefs craft an extensive menu that showcases unique flavors with detailed touches and fusional elements, including—but not limited to—classic American, Italian, Asian, and Mexican influences.

With classic smash burgers, handcrafted flatbreads, an inviting kids menu, and delectable salads and desserts, the variety of dishes cater to every palate.

Start your meal with shareables and light bites like Beef Chislic, Chicharrón Nachos, Walleye Fingers, Chicken Yakitori, and Stensland Cheese Curds.

Niño says that the flagship of their menu is their smash burgers.

“Our burgers are made to order with locally- sourced wagyu beef from North 40 Premium Beef and freshly-baked buns from Breadsmith,” he added.

The selection of burgers includes the Egg Burger, Cajun Burger, Mushroom Swiss Burger, Blue Burger, and Mess With Me Burger, topped with fries, queso, bacon, and grilled pickled jalapeños.

Other signature dishes include Pesto Chicken Flatbread, BBQ Burger, Grilled Skirt Steak, and Steak Nachos.

Those seeking lighter options can consider The Troy, an entrée made from grilled chicken breasts and sauteed vegetables.

“The Troy is perfect for someone who either doesn’t want to eat heavy or is looking to skip carbs,” said marketing manager Megan Kuchta. “We offer a little something for everyone.”

The variety of dishes remains true to their drink menu, which offers specialty cocktails and draft beers.

“We worked with local Remedy Brewing Company to create and serve our own beer, Blue Rock Blonde Ale,” explained Niño.

The Smoked Maple Old Fashioned remains a fan favorite among customers and staff. The smoldering spin on the classic cocktail is smoke-infused Crown Royal Vanilla, bitters, and maple syrup, garnished with a torched orange peel and Luxardo Maraschino cherry.

“The cocktail has its own cool table presentation,” said Niño. “It’s a must-try.”

Try the specialty summer cocktails like the Caramel Apple Mule, Tequila Sangria, Berry Refresh, and The Leilani, a tequila-focused mixed drink with Jose Cuervo Especial Tequila, Cointreau, raspberry pureé, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, a splash of pineapple juice, topped with Sprite, and garnished with an orange.

“WE’RE NOT JUST LIMITED TO BAR FOOD. WE HAVE DIFFERENT SPACES, SO WE CAN ALTER OUR FOOD TO WHATEVER SPACE WE’RE USING.” – JUAN NIÑO

In addition to its culinary offerings, Blue Rock also offers live entertainment from May to August to enhance the dining experience. Local musicians and bands take the stage, providing a vibrant backdrop to a customer’s night out.

Some of the best features of the local eatery is the patio spaces, which are ideal for a meal and drink in the warm weather with music and good company.

“Our patios give us the flexibility to offer different options,” said Niño. “With the live music we host on Friday nights and the fire pits on The Upper Deck, it’s the perfect place to spend a summer evening.”

Decorated with throwback South Dakota sports memorabilia, The Upper Deck brings a sense of nostalgia to dinners. Equipped with a rooftop patio and indoor/outdoor garage doors, customers can enjoy a more intimate experience and breathtaking views.

The Tailgate is where the party starts, says Niño. The space transforms into a patio courtyard with four roll-up garage doors, providing a clear view of the Sanford Pentagon and Sanford Fieldhouse

Along with the Upper Deck and the Tailgate are The Sports Bar and The Lodge.

The Tailgate and Sports Bar areas offer a flexible dining space for families, teams, and groups of all sizes to fuel up before a tournament or to celebrate a victory after a hard-fought game.

If guests are looking for a more dignified atmosphere, The Lodge will satisfy that need. The rustic touches and indoor/outdoor bar and patio offer a chance to celebrate in style.

The four distinctly unique spaces provide a new experience for private events.

“We’ve hosted rehearsal dinners, corporate gatherings, and various social events,” stated Niño. “We also cater to off-site events.”

The talented chef team can assemble anything from their signature menu items to custom menus. Past events have included everything from classic American cheeseburgers to slow-roasted beef tenderloin, seared Chilean sea bass, and Japanese A5 wagyu beef.

“If you want a pasta buffet, we can do it. If you want a pizza bar, we can do that,” said Niño.

The team is dedicated to providing a personalized experience, ensuring that each visit to Blue Rock is memorable.
