Just 10 minutes from Brookings is the town of Volga via US-14. The 605 team had been before for trips to Schade Vineyard & Winery, but I decided to head out on a Thursday afternoon to check out more of the town.

VOLGA WAS FOUNDED IN 1879.

LA STYLE

The first stop was LA Style right on the highway next to Dollar General. Owner Melissa Adee was inside with her baby and was getting ready to pick up her other children from school. LA Style (named after her initials for “Lissa Adee”) started in 2014 as a way for the entrepreneur to keep busy while being a stay-at-home mom.

“I’m not really one to not be busy, so I needed something that allowed me to have my outlet plus raise the kids,” she said. “This started in our house in our basement.”

The storefront (which does not have the address listed on its website or Facebook) is open twice a week on Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. and on Saturdays 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. The rest of the business is primarily online.

“We have something for babies, younger girls, teenagers, and women of all ages. Since we’re a small community we try to hit all of the age levels,” said Adee.

LA Style also has gifts and carries a lot of local vendors, including Hello Larsons Coffee Roastery and SWdesign out of Brookings, and Brick House Creations of Sioux Falls.

“For fashion, I tend to buy what I wear, basically,” said Adee. “It’s very casual, nothing too crazy, and the price point is pretty affordable.”

Shoppers can follow LA Style on social media and join its texting club for the latest.

“I say this all of the time, but this is my dream come true,” said Adee. “I never imagined it would turn into this.”

CC BAR & GRILL

In the Business District just down on Kasan Avenue is CC Bar & Grill. The modern restaurant has flat screens showing the latest sporting events and is known for its chislic. When we asked owner Cade Cradduck why his version of the state’s nosh stands out, he replied, “It’s a secret.”

They’re also known for “fresh hand-pattied burgers daily” and are a family-friendly establishment.

“I would definitely recommend the CC Burger or the Taco Salad,” said Cradduck.

Prime rib is served on weekends and in the wintertime. He says they also play around with weekly specials, and if it’s popular enough, they’ll add it to the menu.

Along with having events like karaoke periodically, CC Bar & Grill has an outdoor patio with bean bag boards to enjoy the nice weather.

On and off sale beer, wine, and liquor is available.

After grabbing a few bites of chislic, I dipped out to get to my last stop, the Lucky Dog Bar & Grill.

THE LUCKY DOG

The Lucky Dog is down the highway heading back toward Brookings and is hard to miss with the dog-themed signage.

Inside is even better with a sign on the ceiling that reads, “Bad dog, no biscuit,” which seems suiting for a bar. All jokes aside, though, the family-friendly venue is tiny, but welcoming.

“Everybody is so nice that comes in here,” said manager Lisa Christenson. “We have a great customer base, and as you can see it’s a cozy place.”

Lucky Dog is also known for burgers, and has themed nights like 50 Cent Wings on Mondays (with over seven available sauces) and Hot Beef on Tuesdays.

Christenson says they see a lot of visitors driving through to Schade or on their way to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

“They’ll stop on by for a photo outside of our place and we’ll always invite them in and get them koozies,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun.”
