Schemmer has been in business for 63 years, and we take pride in having provided quality services to our clients,” said civil engineering manager Matt Sutton. “We are also proud of our ability to adapt to the ever-changing environments in which we work through new technologies, strategies, and ways of thinking.”

Across five states in the Midwest, Schemmer offers architecture, engineering, and construction services to clients.

“We provide services for the following industries: commercial, education, government, healthcare, industrial, multi-family, and senior living,” said Sutton.

Early last year, Schemmer added a new location in Sioux Falls, which brings the total office count to eight.

“I manage our civil engineering group, which includes staff located in several offices,” said Sutton. “In addition to management responsibilities, a large part of my role is developing new client relationships and growing our business.”

Five Random Facts

1. My favorite trip of all time was when I visited Iceland.

2. I’m starting to accumulate more Scotch whisky than I probably should.

3. I started working at Schemmer in 1999.

4. My wife and I got engaged at Falls Park in 1998. Falls Park has changed a lot since then.

5. My wife and I are South Dakota State University alumni, so our house bleeds blue and yellow.

BUSINESS BACKGROUND

I was working for a different firm in Omaha and wasn’t happy with the type of work I was doing. I knew the type of projects Schemmer worked on. So I looked up their number in the phone book—yes, an actual phone book because it was 1999—and made the call to see if they were hiring. I met with their civil engineering manager, and the rest is history.

DIFFERENT DINING

My wife and I enjoy checking out new restaurants in town. We lived away for 23 years, so a lot has changed in that time.

NURTURED BY NATURE

We enjoy spending time outdoors, so exploring new trails in the area has been fun.

GONE FISHING

I have always enjoyed hunting and fishing but didn’t do as much of it as I would have liked when I moved away. South Dakota has so much to offer for these activities, so I’m really looking forward to spending more time doing that.

HOME STATE PRIDE

You can find me attending college football games in the fall, whether it be watching my alma mater Jackrabbits or watching my nephew play at South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.

LOOKS GOOD

Look’s Marketplace has been a favorite for me. I try to get something different each time, whether it be food or one of their own beers.

PEDAL ON THE PATH

We recently started using the bike trail, making the round trip to downtown from our home in southern Sioux Falls. It’s fun to stop downtown before making the trek back home.

THINGS CHANGE

My wife and I are originally from South Dakota and recently moved back after 23 years living in Omaha. It has been enjoyable being close to family and reconnecting with past acquaintances. Seeing the change in Sioux Falls that happened over that time and changes that are currently happening has been exciting.
