Starting as a 605 intern, followed by advertising agency experience, we are excited to welcome artist Yany Avelar back as the multimedia designer for the 605 brand. Get to know the person behind the layout and photography.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m from the Monterey Bay – Salinas, Cali. to be more specific. However, I have lived most of my life in Sioux Falls and it’s where I consider home.

WHY GRAPHIC DESIGN?
It took me a while to land on graphic design. I pursued business administration, and then hospitality management, and journalism before I finally fell on graphic design. I knew that I wanted something where I could combine my creativity and analytical skills and nothing really aligned well with me until i started pursuing design.

I also love that I don’t necessarily have to be tied down to one field or organization. I’ve been able to design for banks, hospitals, and retail companies and it really gives me the fluidity to create different aesthetics.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR HOBBIES?
Most of my hobbies are art related. I love exploring new mediums and creating something new. At the moment I’ve been really enjoying ceramics, jewelry making, and printmaking. However, I also love hiking, traveling, napping, and scouring for vintage relics.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ANY PLACE, WHERE WOULD IT BE?
I have a few places on my bucket list that I have left to explore, but at the top would have to be a Patagonia excursion in South America.  I’m hoping to make it there within the next two years.

IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A DESERT ISLAND, WHAT THREE THING WOULD YOU BRING?
If I were stranded on a desert island, I would bring a film camera to keep a diary, a solar powered computer with all my favorite Netflix shows, and my fiance so we could be miserable together.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS?
I have two small dogs, Hurley, who is an 8-year-old Shih Tzu Poodle mix and Einstein, a 4-year-old Terrier Mix with terrible anxiety. I also have a cat named Frida that I found abandoned in a grocery store parking lot last year. I’m trying to convince my fiance that we need a fish too, but he insists we don’t.

WHERE ARE YOUR GO-TO SPOTS IN SIOUX FALLS?
One of my favorite places in Sioux Falls would be the bike trails. I love being able to get on the trail from almost anywhere in town to ride my long-board. I also love hanging out downtown, my favorite sushi spot and coffee shop are downtown. Lastly, I love the farmers’ market on Saturdays at Falls Park. They have the best assortment of local produce and products!

NAME ONE GOAL YOU HAVE FOR 2018-2019.
Before 2018 comes to a close, I’m hoping to get registered to start my masters program in web development.

I’m also working on planning a small destination wedding for early next year in San Francisco.

Stay tuned for awesome projects by Yany, and check out the rest of the 605 crew
