While it’s no question that South Dakotans love their state every day of the year, there is a designated day for people to come together and embrace it. And it’s right around the corner! June 5 has been dubbed 605 Day for South Dakota citizens to celebrate their pride.

The date for this celebration (6.05) has been chosen to represent the state’s singular area code, and South Dakota happens to be one of the 12 states that does so.

“The 605 is a great place to live and call home, so 605 Day is the perfect time to celebrate our state! Only a few states have the pleasure of only having one area code, so we’re lucky to be able to celebrate in this way,” said Stephanie Palmer, social media manager and content strategist with the South Dakota Department of Tourism. “It is one of my favorite days of the year and gives us the opportunity to get together and support our home.”

Festivities across the state have been planned in honor of the state, including events at Carpenter Bar in Sioux Falls and Main Street Square in Rapid City from 4-6 p.m.

“We’re honored to host 605 Day at the Square! Our state’s great faces and great places really make this a day to be celebrated,” said Karlee Baumann, marketing manager of Main Street Square and Destination Rapid City.

Another way the state hopes to celebrate is online. People are encouraged to use the hashtag #605Day on social media to share posts inspired by the state. Different Snapchat filters will also be available on the platform.
