Roxanne Rathbun started designing jewelry as a child in Los Angeles and started selling jewelry at local salons and boutiques by the time she was in high school. After studying at the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising, Rathbun was involved in multiple businesses and international sales before starting On the Rox. On the Rox offers unique jewelry, healing crystals, sage, and more in a new downtown Rapid City showroom and her online store.
605 chatted with Rathbun about her recent storefront expansion, the healing properties of crystals and stones, and her favorite places in town.
ON THE ROX STARTED BECAUSE… it’s in my bones! I’ve been designing since I was a kid. I was so lucky to have a musician father and a boss babe mother. They taught me to embrace my artistic side and to be an entrepreneur. No limitations to my creativity!
WHAT PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT CRYSTALS IS… that each crystal and stone has its own properties and uses.
THE CRYSTAL INDEX ON MY WEBSITE… is a place to go research each stone I have. Once you’ve given it a look, you can make an educated decision on which stone suits your needs! 
THE DIFFERENT SECTIONS OF SHOPPING ARE… broken down to help you find what you need. Rox + Chains are necklaces. Rings + Things are anything from rings to pendulums. Crystal Chemistry is crystal-infused essential oil perfumes. Stix + Stones are anything from bundled sage or palo santo to crystals.
ONE MOMENT I’LL NEVER FORGET SINCE OPENING ON THE ROX IS… opening day on Black Friday. I was met with such an immediate show of support and huge rush of shoppers I had to put my kids to work to make sure all the orders got out in time!
HOW I NAME NECKLACES/PIECES IS… by honoring one of my many muses. I’m surrounded by an incredible community of strong, creative, compassionate women, not to mention daughters, mothers, sisters, and friends.
THE CRYSTAL INDEX
AMETHYST: The Spiritual Enhancer. Often called the anti-anxiety stone, amethyst can boost energy and provide spiritual protection, as well as heal physical ailments, insomnia, and emotional issues.
BLACK TOURMALINE: The Great Protector. Considered the most protective of all stones, black tourmaline can heal and protect on multiple levels-emotional, mental, physical, and spiritual.
CITRINE: The Happy Stone. Citrine can relieve negative thoughts, anger, and mood swings. Plus, putting a citrine stone in the farthest left corner of your home is said to bring money and abundance.
ONYX: The Soothing Stone. Onyx aids in emotional and physical strength by calming the nerves. It’s also told to bring good fortune and block out black magic.
ROSE QUARTZ: The Love Stone. Rose quartz opens the heart chakra, enhances one’s self-esteem, and diminishes feelings of anger or jealousy.

SOMETHING I’M DOING WITH MY BUSINESS RIGHT NOW THAT I’M EXCITED ABOUT IS… extending our storefront business. We’re hoping to offer many Open House Shopping Parties, classes, and events.
SAGE IS… a plant native to South Dakota. I’m lucky enough to have a mother-in-law who brings me beautiful bundles of it from her property. When paired and burned with a crystal, I believe it can clear negative energy and then hold the properties of the crystal, and it’s just super pretty to put on your mantle for home décor. 
PEOPLE CAN GET INTO SAGE BY… clearing their minds and spaces from negativity. I always burn my sage with a crystal to set the intention of the stone. When the sage is done burning, I leave my crystal in the room to hold that energy.
WHEN I WALK AROUND DOWNTOWN, ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO STOP BY IS… Aj’s Wicked Salon & Spa. I’ve had the opportunity to know these amazingly talented women for over five years. They take such pride in their business and you never leave feeling anything other than beautiful.
WHEN I’M NOT WORKING ON MY BUSINESS, YOU CAN FIND ME… wrangling my very own “Brady Bunch.” I have two stepsons and three daughters. A perfect blend of yours, mine, and ours. 
I LOVE TO GRAB A BITE OR DRINK AT… Kōl or Murphy’s Pub and Grill. Always my go-to spots. Wonderful food, and my favorite dirty martinis.
MY FAVORITE PLACE IN RAPID CITY IS… my home. I’m a big-time couch potato. My idea of a good time is binge-watching garbage TV shows and movies with snacks at hand.
MY FAVORITE PLACE TO GO FOR INSPIRATION IS… over to my mom’s. She is the go-to guru for all things fashion, style, class, and culture.. 
SOMEONE LOCAL WHO I ADMIRE IS… my husband, Oakley Tye. He is the hardest working man I’ve every met. Plus, he’s kind of a dreamboat. You may have heard him before on Hot 93.1 or seen him DJ downtown in Rapid City.
