Spearfish Canyon Lodge offers the perfect nature getaway for individuals, couples, and families right in the heart of the Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway.

“We are an adventure resort with nature right at our front door and a place where you can come see a little bit of everything,” said assistant general manager Melissa Quenzer. “You really could come here and spend quite a few days and not have to leave if you don’t want to. We have an onsite restaurant, fuel, a 24-hour gift shop, and we have rentals.”

With 57 total rooms to reserve, find one that suits the needs of you and your family.

“The great thing is that all of our rooms are very unique,” said Quenzer. “We’ve got rooms starting with two queen beds, which is pretty standard. Then we’ve also got executive suites that have fireplaces, jacuzzi tubs, and private balconies.”

Off the main property, there are the Creekside Units and the Berry Patch Cabin, which are more spacious and private.

The resort is just a short drive from Deadwood and Spearfish, making it an ideal location for the outdoor recreation offered at the resort, along with the amenities and events nearby.

“But we also still have that secluded feel of just being in nature where you can relax, go on a hike, or rent a UTV,” said Quenzer.

With summer in full swing, another option is to visit The Latchstring Restaurant across from the main lodge to enjoy a meal on the patio. The eatery is open every day of the year, but the view during the summer months is breathtaking.

“Everything is homemade down there. They are known for their Rainbow Trout and their Buffalo Stew,” explained Quenzer.

With trout being a local species, the filets with white wine cream sauce are quite popular amongst guests.

Another delicacy on the menu is the hearty Buffalo Stew, which has buffalo sirloin, potatoes, and a mix of vegetables, all served in a bread bowl.

“This recipe has been around for many years, and we’ve carried it through the times,” said Quenzer.

Last summer, the restaurant’s patio underwent renovations, doubling its seating capacity and making way for an experience more in tune with the surroundings.

“When Latchstring did that, they did some clear cutting so we have an even better view of the pines,” Quenzer explained. “After eating, you can hear the rush of the Spearfish waterfall in the background.”

“YOU CAN COME BY YOURSELF OR BRING YOUR FAMILY OUT AND HAVE FUN FOR DAYS AND STILL NOT BE TOO FAR AWAY TO TRAVEL TO MOUNT RUSHMORE OR DEADWOOD.” -MELISSA QUENZER

Damage Waiver

Along with being one of the places you can get a UTV permit, the rental center also has damage waivers that limit max out-of-pocket expenses in the case of damage.

Relax on the puppy patio outside of the Latchstring Restaurant.

Out front, the restaurant also offers a patio that welcomes four-legged family members. The “Puppy Patio” has water bowls for the dogs to drink from while you dine in the Spearfish Canyon breeze.

Don’t forget to check out the Roughlock Lounge in the main lobby for seasonal drink specials, and to try their homemade Bloody Mary mix in action. The lounge also has as a custom canoe bonfire.

Other ways to enjoy the outdoors at the resort include hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, off-roading, and more.

Visit the Adventure Rentals on site to pick up an ATV or UTV, a Polaris Slingshot, snowmobiles, a fat tire bike, fishing equipment, an ebike, or snowshoes.

“We are a certified Polaris outfitter,” said Quenzer. “We run brand new fleets every year with UTVs and snowmobiles. At the end of the season, Polaris will come and pick up the UTVs and drop off the snowmobiles.”

Once you’ve got your rental and a permit, drive it right off onto the trails from the parking lot.
