In October of 2022, Plaza Azteca opened its doors to Sioux Falls as a home featuring the traditional flavors of Mexican cuisine.

“Our mission is to bring a different experience to the area,” explained general manager Victor Magana. “When people think of Mexican restaurants, they always have something specific in mind, but when they come here, it’s something completely different.”

Walking into Plaza Azteca, patrons are greeted by a modern and fresh atmosphere. The interior is encapsulated in sleek tile, black marble dining tables, and upbeat music.

The establishment prides itself on providing a clean and distinct dining experience, somewhere people can bring friends and family.

At the core of the eatery lies its expansive menu, featuring an array of authentic Mexican cuisine that caters to a wide range of palates.

From sizzling fajitas and cheesy enchiladas to traditional tacos and refreshing salads, each menu item is crafted with fresh, quality ingredients.

“Everything is made in house,” said Magana. “Everything down to our salsa is made fresh daily.”

““our founder, ruben leon, started plaza azteca out of his passion for the kitchen. he loved to cook and experiment with new things” -Victor Magana

Every meal is served with complimentary chips and two homemade salsas, which Magana shared is a secret family recipe.

One of the highlights of Plaza Azteca’s menu is its Fresh Table Side Guacamole. Brought and catered right before your eyes is a delectable side of creamy guacamole with jalepeños, tomatoes, onion, lime, salt, and cilantro.

Other highlighted menu items include the Enchiladas El Jefe, which includes three tortillas stuffed with carne asada, grilled corn and onions, covered with queso fresco, sour cream, and Plaza’s special corn sauce over a bed of Mexican rice.

Magana adds that their Sizzling Fajitas have become popular among new and returning customers. Choose between chicken, steak, shrimp, or a combination of all three with the Texas Fajitas.

All fajitas are served in a searing skillet with grilled bell peppers and onions, completed with a side of rice, beans, pico de gallo, sour cream, and fluffy flour tortillas.

“Our Birria Tacos have become a huge fan favorite and a personal favorite of mine,” shared Magana.

The Birria Tacos consist of three corn tortillas dipped in Birria style beef broth, stuffed with beef birria, queso Chihuahua, chopped onions, and cilantro. Extra Birria broth is served to provide extra flavor.

““WE CONSTANTLY WORK ON TRYING TO UPGRADE OUR MENU AND BRINGING IN FRESH IDEAS FROM OUR MAIN OWNER AND CO-OWNERS.” -VICTOR MAGANA

For those with dietary preferences or restrictions, Plaza Azteca also has vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options.

Magana says that a meal isn’t complete without ordering a specialty margarita.

“Our margaritas are made with 100% fresh fruit, no margarita mix, and no sour mix,” he added.

Sip on a House Margarita with flavors ranging from the original lime, peach, or raspberry, or try a frozen version in strawberry or lime.

Other popular margaritas include the Pineapple Spicy Serrano, Tropical, or the Sangria-Rita. This frozen lime margarita is topped with a mini bottle of Stella Rosa Sangria and mixed berries, offering the perfect combination of sweetness and tartness.
