When Jacob and Kelly Bunde opened Outpost 1875 in Sioux Falls, the business focused solely on designing and manufacturing accessory dwelling units “for the individual in search of living a better life.”

Throughout their visits and discovery calls with clients, the Bundes gathered the thought of these prefabricated, modern tiny homes becoming Airbnbs.

“Our love for unique vacation rentals and wanting to offer people the opportunity to be inside and enjoy an Outpost led us to dream up Outpost Adventures,” shared Kelly.

Outpost Adventures provides an immersive vacation escape for guests seeking to be wrapped in nature’s embrace.

The Bunde’s five-acre plot of land in Custer offers more than an average camping experience. It’s glamping at its finest, where luxury meets adventure and comfort dances with the wilderness.

Jacob, a licensed AIA architect, personally designs the Outposts. The design of the units incorporates clean, industrial materials, while featuring a minimalist style.

“I designed the Outposts with full glass windows so guests can lay in a luxurious bed, snuggled next to a fireplace, and watch the deer at the automated feeders,” explained Jacob.

For Jacob, angling the Outposts to avoid obstructed views while providing a maximum amount of privacy was important. He added that parking is removed from the units to reduce noise, headlights, and distraction.

“A fun design feature I created for this property is an outdoor shower,” shared Jacob. “I expect to continue adding those types of amenities to the place with the goals of digging a pond and setting up a sauna.”

Nestled amongst the vast land of the Black Hills are three outposts: the Grey Wolf Outpost, the Blue Jay Outpost, and the Buffalo Canvas Tent.

GLAMPING (SHORT FOR GLAMOROUS CAMPING) INVOLVES MORE LUXURIOUS ACCOMMODATIONS & FACILITIES COMPARED TO TRADITIONAL CAMPING.

All three rentals blend seamlessly into the wooded landscape, offering a peaceful sanctuary and modern glamping experience.

The Blue Jay Outpost was inspired by the clear blue skies of South Dakota, while the Grey Wolf Outpost was inspired by the confident and alluring canine.

The 126-square-foot outposts are equipped with a queen-sized bed with 600 thread-count linens, a beverage fridge, a microwave, a Culligan water dispenser, a Keurig with coffee pods and creamer, and free unlimited wifi.

The Buffalo Canvas tent was named after the animal’s resourcefulness and pursuit of success, said Kelly.

The tent offers a 168-square-foot space equipped with a king-sized bed, with 600 thread-count linens, a kitchenette, bottled water service, a mini-fridge, a microwave, and a coffee bar.

The most secluded of the three units— the Buffalo Canvas—offers both the clear sounds of nature and protection from the elements.

“All three outposts have reserved Adirondack chairs and a private firepit to enjoy s’mores at the end of your day filled with adventure,” said Kelly.

A Shower Haus is accessible to all tenants staying on campus. Tucked away in the forest for ultimate privacy, the stand-alone shower house offers modern amenities for rinsing off after a day of outdoor activities.

All guests receive a fresh, clean set of towels, and a luxury microfiber robe to help enhance the sense of calm and relaxation.

Outpost Adventures doesn’t just provide a place to rest your head, but a springboard for endless exploration. Enjoy quick access to the George S. Mickelson Trail, which guides you to downtown Custer. The outposts also feature exclusive gated access to hiking in the National Black Forest, with the bonus of being within driving distance to popular attractions like Custer State Park, Jewel Cave National Monument, Sylvan Lake, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

“Exploring the state and federal parks in the area makes for great memories,” said Jacob.
