1.) Race for the Roses

Stanley County Fairgrounds | Fort Pierre | 6 P.M. | May 1

Head out to Stanley County Fairgrounds in Fort Pierre to participate in Race for the Roses. Ten horses will compete in each of the six virtual races shown. Grab some dinner while there. Then from 10 p.m. to midnight, KC Hughes will perform keeping audience members swaying to the beat.

2.) SMUCD Cultural Arts Jam Session 

Hitchcock Park | Mitchell | Noon | May 8

Don’t miss bringing the family to the School of Multi-Universal Culture Design (SMUCD) Cultural Arts Jam Festival. The melodies of Mad Bull Family Dance Group and Seeds of Amarna will work to bring together different cultures and promote unity at Hitchcock Park in Mitchell. And the kids won’t be left out of the fun with 11 different activities for them to do, like the Jenga Table, Sack Racing, Crafts, Musical Chairs, and more.

3.) Deadwood Red Dirt Music Festival 

Deadwood Mountain Grand | Deadwood | 8 P.M. | May 15

The Casey Donahew Band will headline the Deadwood Red Dirt Music Festival. Following the band will be Ian Munsick, Randy Burghardt, and more, bringing the Nashville music scene to Deadwood for the evening. Munsick is even bringing a “new brand of country” with songs that have yet to be released.

4.) Spring Parade of Homes

Various Locations | Sioux Falls | 1 P.M. | May 15-16, 22-23

Spend a couple weekends exploring beautiful homes in the Spring Parade of Homes in Sioux Falls. While touring, get ideas for your own home, see how other homeowners are decorating, and meet up with various builders. The Sioux Empire Home Builders Care Foundation has a list of over 30 homes to tour for the event.

5.) Frühlingsfest

Main Street Square | Rapid City | 1 P.M. | May 22

Grab a friend and spend some time in Main Street Square for Frühlingsfest. Live local music like Camp Comfort will fill the air while event goers check out vendors, microbreweries, and the Beverage Garden. Kids can have some fun, too, with games in the grass.

6.) Big Hill Trail Run

Big Hill Trail | Spearfish | 9 A.M. | May 30

As part of the Black Hills Runners Club Trail Series, runners can make their way to the Big Hill Trails. Participate in a 13K or 5K in the brusque morning air to close out the month of May.
