OCTOBER FEATURED BREWER
WOODEN LEGS BREWING COMPANY

“OUR INTENT ALWAYS HAS BEEN TO BRING GREAT CRAFT BEER TO THE CITIZENS AND STUDENTS IN BROOKINGS AND DO SO IN SUCH A WAY THAT IS SUPER UNDERSTANDABLE AND TRANSPARENT,” SAID OWNER SETH KOCH. “PEOPLE CAN COME AND CHECK OUT THE TAPROOM, GET TO KNOW THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE THE BEER, AND GET TO KNOW THEIR COMMUNITY IN GENERAL.”

After opening the taproom doors in 2013, Wooden Legs Brewing Company has aimed to kindle “great beer and great conversation” between friends bonding over a board game.

“We’ve kind of leaned into the fact that all of our staff has a little bit of ‘nerdy’ in them,” said Koch. “When we started talking about ways to bring people together to just chill and enjoy the experience, board games were a really natural way of doing it.”

The brewery’s board game collection includes The Settlers of Catan, Santorini, Brewmaster: Craft Beer Game, the prized Monopoly: Onyx Edition, and more.

At various times throughout the week, guests can attend events like Trivia Tuesday, a battle of brains; Learn to Play, a chance to learn a new game; and Wall Street Wednesday, a stock market-style drinking experience.

Koch says Wall Street Wednesday is one of the most unique events they host. Starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday, prices of all beers fluctuate from their original amount depending on what people are drinking more of and what they aren’t.

“We have our prices on a big screen, and if nobody orders a particular beer for two minutes, the beer price drops,” said Koch. “And if somebody comes in and orders two or three of a certain pint in two minutes, that price goes up and all the others go down. It’s like a dynamically ran happy hour.”

Being one of the first craft beer breweries on I-29, Koch says his brewery focuses on catering to a diverse set of tastes.

“Sometimes this is the first craft beer bar they’ve been in, let alone brewery in some cases. We really try hard to make sure there’s a bouquet of a whole bunch of different beers,” said Koch.

And when those customers walk through the doors of Wooden Legs, Koch wants them to remember one thing: “It’s okay to be a little dorky and talk with the people you brought.”

STUPID LITTLE PEACH SHOES

Peach Cobbler Wheat Ale | ABV: 6.5% | IBU: 20
Fun wheat-style beer that includes fresh peaches, cinnamon, lactose, and vanilla. This beer has a fruity, sweet taste that’s meant to be a great transition beer from summer to fall. And just as it smells of peach cobbler, it leaves a taste of the dessert behind, as well.
