Throughout October, Rapid City’s Old MacDonald’s Farm transforms into an autumn wonderland during Fall Festival Days

This annual event—which takes place every Saturday throughout the month—offers a blend of farm-themed opportunities, food, and entertainment.

Fall Festival Days is a feast for the senses, as visitors can explore the farm’s charming grounds, interact with friendly farm animals, and participate in various hands-on activities.

“We have hay wagon rides, corn bins, bouncy houses, and the list goes on and on,” said owner Thane Rose.

Since purchasing the farm in 2013, Thane and his wife, Gina, have been adding, tweaking, and reinventing the festival and their property.

Most recently, the Roses have been working on the reconstruction of the farm’s gift shop.

“With this rebuilding, we’re hoping to start serving food out of the gift shop instead of the snack barn,” explained Thane.

The shop also boasts farm-related toys, souvenirs, and keepsakes, allowing visitors to commemorate their trip.

“Our main goal for next year is to have the shop up and running,” said Thane.

Old MacDonald’s Farm is open yearly from May 1 to the last Saturday of October.

Another way the Roses try to keep the festival new is by supplying vendors who cater to various specialties, like balloons, face painting, caricatures, and more.

Thane says something new they’re doing is bringing in craft vendors during the last two weekends of the festival.

“Visitors can then support them and purchase their crafts,” he added.

The festival also features a petting zoo where attendees can get up close and personal with goats, sheep, pigs, horses, llamas, and even emus.

For those seeking a bit more adventure, there are train and pony rides for kids and wagon rides for the whole family.

Other fall-themed activities include pumpkin picking and painting.

“We have all of the activities someone would need to enjoy a fall day at a festival,” said Thane.

Kids can also try their hand at feeding the baby animals through the farm’s bottle-feeding activity.

“Guests can also watch our pig races and cheer for their favorite to win,” said Thane.

Old MacDonald’s Farm is home to around 200 animals, which include everything from a variety of birds, emus, cows, horses, goats, sheep, pigs, and fish.

Old MacDonald’s Farm prides itself on being more than just an enjoyable destination; it’s a wholesome place of learning and discovery.

Not only do visitors leave with lasting memories, but also with a greater understanding of farm animals and rural life.

“My favorite part is being able to watch people learn about animals that they’ve never been or typically get to be around,” said Thane. “I love seeing the guests’ enjoyment.”
